In early 1999 the hospital was faced with closure because the washing facilities did not meet the government standard.
Thanks to a generous legacy the Trust was able to purchase two industrial washing machines that not only met the standards but exceeded them.
The machines are still working perfectly today.
It is hard to imagine that a children’s hospital, the size of Great Ormond Street, was having to manage on three incubators. Of these three incubators, one was new but the others were not only old but were not working properly.
Once again, thanks to a very generous gift, we were able to ship over one dozen, brand new, incubators both fixed and portable.
The Play Therapy department, run by Dana Tanasescu, is always inspiring to visit. So worthwhile, so little money!
On a recent visit we witnessed a graphic demonstration
of the effectiveness of play therapy. A young child with leukaemia needed to have a large cannula inserted. As we were arriving on the ward the child was clearly in great distress and panic—there was no possibility of the nurses being able to insert the cannula with the young boy in this state, so they called for Dana. Within
a very short space of time the child was calm, the
cannula inserted and the treatment continuing.
